Chemical plant fire still smoldering

There are still signs of life of the fire that burned Euclid Chemical Company to the ground this past weekend. The Bureau County Emergency Operations Center’s Joe Bertetto says three small areas still appear to be smoldering. Bertetto is serving as public information officer for the current emergency. Bertetto says Sheffield fire department has the only units still on the scene. He says they are there to help Clean Harbors…the group contracted by Euclid Chemical to help clean up hazardous material. He says the EPA is also still present. Bertetto says that Route 6 is open. Route 40 from its junction with Route 6 north to I-80 will remain closed until the EPA allows it to be open. The 38,000 sq foot building east of Sheffield caught fire early Saturday morning. Several firemen are being treated for symptoms of nausea and dizziness for long exposure to the smoke. None of the companies 15 employees were injured.
