Kirk Defeats Giannoulias In U.S. Senate Race

Republican Congressman Mark Kirk has defeated Democrat Alexi Giannoulias to become Illinois' next U.S. senator. Kirk thanked his supporters during his acceptance speech. The seat Kirk will fill was once held by President Barack Obama. Kirk will not have to wait until January to be seated, because he was also elected to finish the remainder of Senator Roland Burris' term.
