Princeton City Council hesitates on passing tax levy

princeton-sealThe Princeton City Council decided to table passing the tax levy at Monday’s meeting due to fear of making the wrong decision. The city has to decide to tax at a lower or higher rate depending on whether Perry Memorial Hospital has to pay taxes on their entire property. And that decision has not been made by the state yet. PMH now pays between 33- and 37-thousand dollars in taxes per year. If they are taxed on all their property, they would have to pay 800-thousand dollars. Mayor Keith Cain says most of their property has been

tax-exempt because they are classified as a charitable organization.  The issue has been tabled to a special meeting on Tuesday, December 27th at 9 a.m. at City Hall. It was announced that due to the upcoming Christmas and New Year’s holidays, garbage and recycling pick up will be as follows: Monday, December 26th collected on Tuesday, December 27th and Monday January 2nd collected on Tuesday, January 3rd. City Hall will be closed for Christmas at 12 noon on Friday, December 23rd and will be closed all day Monday, December 26th. It will also be closed at 12 noon Friday, December 30th and all day Monday, January 2nd for the New Year.
