Local response to death penalty action is negative

An area lawmaker is at odds with the Governor’s repeal of capital punishment. State Senator Sue Rezin voted against a halt to the death penalty. Rezin, whose district includes most of LaSalle and part of Bureau County, says she believes that the death penalty is an important tool for law enforcement and state’s attorneys. Spring Valley Democrat Frank Mautino also voted against its repeal.  Mautino says heinous crimes deserve heinous punishment.  He says his opposition is reinforced by the 1991 kidnapping and murder of 6 year of Kahla Lansing of Spring Valle.  Jeffrey Rissley plead guilty to Lansing's murder and is serving a life sentence at the Pontiac Correctional Center.
