IVCC taking Putnam County to court

Illinois Valley Community College is taking Putnam County to court. IVCC is pursuing legal action to correct a tax abatement dispute with Putnam County in relation to the Marquis Energy ethanol plant in the Bureau-Putnam Enterprise Zone. Being in the enterprise zone, the plant is eligible for property tax abatement for 10 years. But IVCC President Jerry Corcoran claims a resolution the IVCC board approved was only for tax abatements for properties with improvements after July 1st, 2007. Corcoran says Marquis Energy’s construction began prior to that date, as early as 2005. Corcoran says $1.4 million over 10 years is at stake. The matter will be heard in Putnam County circuit court.
