Teenagers charged with arson in Westclox fire
Two teenagers are facing aggravated arson charges after allegedly setting Peru's historic Westclox building on fire over the weekend. The pair allegedly started the fire by pouring gas on a boat stored in the building, then lighting the gas. More than 20 fire departments were called to fight the blaze. Officials say they couldn't get their hoses to the middle building so the fire just had to burn itself out. An anonymous caller reportedly gave Peru police a tip that led to the arrests of 17-year old Steven Gallagher of La Salle and a 15-year old boy from Peru. The arson charges were elevated to felony “aggravated” because a firefighter was injured. Gallagher appeared in La Salle County Court yesterday where his bond was set at $250,000. The 15-year old was being held in juvenile detention in Ottawa and makes his first court appearance tomorrow.
