Appeals Court Orders Stay Of Contraceptive Provision
(Chicago, IL) -- A federal appeals court in Chicago is telling the U.S. government that it cannot enforce a provision of the Affordable Care Act in the case of a general contractor from Highland. The 7th U.S. Court of Appeals voted 2-to-1 to block the government from requiring Cyril and Jane Korte to pay for contraceptives as mandated by the federal health law. The Kortes said the provision violated their faith, and the court agreed, issuing a temporary injuction against enforcement.
President Wants Illinois Gay Marriage Law
(Washington, DC) -- President Obama wants the Illinois General Assembly to pass a law that will make same-sex marriage legal in the state. White House spokesman Shin Inouye [[ ih-NOH-way ]] tells the Chicago "Sun-Times" yesterday that the President would support the "Religious Freedom and Marriage Fairness Act" if he was still in the state Legislature. The sponsors of the measure plan to put the bill up for a vote as early as next week.
Breech Baby Born On Side Of Road
(Oswego, IL) -- An Oswego mother and her child are doing fine after a scary ordeal that resulted in the baby being born on the side of Interstate 88 on Friday. Megan Martinez went into labor at 7:30 a.m. Friday and her husband Chad began the trip from Oswego to Downers Grove to get to the
hospital. Megan said she felt the baby coming and Chad stopped alongside the road. The baby came out feet-first and with the umbilical cord wrapped around her neck, but Chad, a state trooper, managed to revive her. Both mother and daughter are doing well.
Waukegan YMCA To Close
(Waukegan, IL) -- Tomorrow will be the last day for the Waukegan YMCA, as the Lake County Family YMCA has announced it will be permanently closed due to financial difficulties. The YMCA plans to refund approximately 47-thousand dollars in donations made trying to keep the facility open. The Waukegan Y will close for good at 1 p.m.
