Madigan Switch Boosts State Pension Proposal
(Springfield, IL) -- House Speaker Michael Madigan has switched his position and legislators could consider a new state pension compromise next week. Governor Pat Quinn and four legislative leaders will meet today in Chicago to discuss the proposal. Quinn is hopeful of getting a pension deal before the current General Assembly wraps up its work on Wednesday.
Union Bill To Be Discussed
(Springfield, IL) -- A bill that restricts the number of state employees who can join unions isn't immediately heading to Governor Quinn. Instead, Senator Don Harmon of Oak Park filed a motion to reconsider the vote in the Senate. The bill affects several unions, including the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees.
Day Care Centers Must Test For Radon
(Springfield, IL) -- Testing for radon is now mandatory at day care centers. Radon is a colorless, odorless, and tasteless radioactive gas that could lead to lung cancer. Home daycare centers can purchase home testing kits to comply with the law, but non-residential centers must
hire a licensed contractor to perform the test.
Second Federal Inmate Captured In Illinois
(Chicago, IL) -- A second federal inmate is back behind bars following a daring Illinois prison break in Chicago last month. Kenneth Connelly was found at an apartment complex in the southwest suburbs. He and cellmate Joseph Banks were able to escape the federal jail using a rope made out of bedsheets. Banks was captured two days later.
Hospitals Fear More Cuts After Fiscal Cliff Deal
(Peoria, IL) -- The Illinois Hospital Association is telling the new Congress, "No more cuts." Spokesman Danny Chun says the fiscal cliff deal in Washington managed to avert a scheduled cut in Medicare payments to doctors but shifter the pain to hospitals. Hospitals in the state area aren't sure yet how, or how much they'll be hurt by the cuts in the legislation.
