Gertie The Groundhog Predicts Early Spring
(Edwards, IL) -- Gertie the Groundhog says there will be an early spring in Illinois, something his more famous cousin in Pennsylvania agrees with. People from across the state came to Wildlife Prairie State Park yesterday to see Gertie and hear what her prediction for the end of winter would be. According to his keepers, Gertie did not see her shadow, meaning spring will come early for the state. Gertie also seemed to predict that the Baltimore Ravens will win today's Super Bowl.
Peoria Candidate Forum Gets Heated
(Peoria, IL) -- A Peoria forum for candidates for the city council leads to raised voices and accusations of inattention to important projects yesterday. Ten candidates attended the forum at the Childers Banquet and Event Center, looking for support for the February 26th primary. Most of the fireworks happened between 1st District candidates, with
Councilman at-large Gary Sandberg accusing two of his opponents of not supporting the Warehouse District Redevelopment project. Candidate Randall Emert also implied that challenger Denise Moore presumed she would win the 1st District seat, which prompted Moore to shout for Emert to, quote, "quit lying."
Winnetka Trustee Pleads Guilty To DUI
(Skokie, IL) -- Winnetka Trustee Jennifer Spinney will be unable to drive after pleading guilty to driving under the influence Friday in a Skokie courtroom. Spinney will pay a 13-hundred dollar fine, have her license suspended for a yet undetermined period of time, and have to be under court supervision for a year. She will also have to attend and complete a victim impact panel as part of her sentence. Spinney was originally charged after being pulled over in Skokie last September and refusing to take a Breathalyzer test.
Illinois Seeks To End Home Losing Streak Against Wisconsin
(Champaign, IL) -- The University of Illinois men's basketball team will try to end a three-game home losing streak today when they meet the University of Wisconsin in Champaign. The Illini are coming off a loss to 13th-ranked Michigan State, which dropped Illinois to 2-and-6 in the Big Ten. In their first game this season, the Illini lost to Wisconsin by 23 points.
