Transportation Chief Warns About Impacts Of Looming Spending Cuts
(Undated) -- Looming automatic spending cuts could create a mess for Illinois air travelers. Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood says furloughs of some air traffic controllers will likely prompt flight cancellations and long delays. The Peoria General Wayne A. Downing International Airport could have its overnight tower shift eliminated. In Bloomington, the Central Illinois Regional Airport would face having its air traffic control facility closed.
GOP Chair Brady Says Ouster Attempt Has No Upside
(Springfield, IL) -- Illinois Republican Party chairman Pat Brady says an attempt to remove him has "no upside" for the party. A special meeting of the GOP state central committee will be held March 9th in Tinley Park. A move to oust Brady will be made at that time. Brady's support for same-sex marriage has irked some members of the party.
Wirtz Beverage To Build In Lexington
(Bloomington, IL) -- Lexington will be getting a nearly eight-million-dollar warehouse and distribution center from Wirtz Beverage Illinois. The company has chosen Lexington over Bloomington. It will close its Peoria operation and will relocate employees to the new facility which is expected to open next year. The Lexington City Council must still give a thumbs up
to a proposed redevelopment agreement with Wirtz. City Mayor John Mohr says it will involve property tax sharing.
Prisoner Early Release Program Being Launched
(Springfield, IL) -- A prisoner early release program is being launched in the state. Officials say the move could reduce some of the overcrowding with the prison system. It could also reduce some of the violence taking place behind bars. The first of a dozen eligible inmates could be set free in the coming month. Inmates who might qualify will be made by the Illinois Department of Corrections during a review of prisoner files. The program is aimed at nonviolent offenders.
Peoria Native Up For Second Oscar
(Peoria, IL) -- When the Oscars are handed out tonight, Peoria native Tami Lane could pick up her second trophy. Lane, a Hollywood makeup artist has been nominated for an Oscar for her work on the film "The Hobbit." Lane won her first award in 2006 for makeup work in the movie "The Chronicles of Narnia: the Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe."
