Another Inmate Dead At Menard Prison
(Chester, IL) -- There's been another inmate death at Menard prison. Initial reports indicate Yusuf Abuzir may have died yesterday as a result of injuries sustained in a fight on January 26th. The Randolph County Coroner wouldn't confirm the cause of death, citing the ongoing investigation. Abuzir's death comes just one month after another Menard inmate was killed by his cell mate.
State Reps To Debate Concealed Carry Today
(Springfield, IL) -- A concealed carry debate is scheduled in the Illinois House today. It's been an issue on the table for several years now, with mostly Chicago politicians voting against the idea because of their high crime rate. But a federal court says the state has to pass a law by June 9th. The proposal up for debate allows people to carry guns in public but they wouldn't be able to carry in places like schools, churches, or government buildings.
Gay Marriage Bill In Committee Today
(Springfield, IL) -- The bill to legalize gay marriage is up for debate in the House today. The Executive committee is scheduled to hear from both supporters and opponents in a 3:00 p.m. hearing. It's still unclear if the
proposal has enough support to clear the House. It passed in the Senate on Valentine's Day.
House Republicans Want Workers' Comp Reform
(Springfield, IL) -- House Republicans say the state's Workers' Compensation system is flawed. They say more than 26-thousand workers filed claims between 2007 and 2010, costing taxpayers about 295-million dollars. Many of those claims had no medical evidence to prove the claim was justified. The GOP has introduced seven bills that seek to tighten the standards for filing claims and receiving workers' compensation payouts.
Peterson Transferred To Pontiac Correctional Center
(Pontiac, IL) -- Drew Peterson will serve out his sentence at the Pontiac Correctional Center. The former Bolingbrook cop was transferred to the facility last Friday. That's just one day after a judge handed him a 38 year sentence for killing his third wife back in 2004.
Coyote Spotted Near Ottawa Elementary School
(Ottawa, IL) -- Parents in Ottawa may want to drive their kids to school instead of letting them walk. Someone snapped a picture of a coyote running across the McKinley School playground yesterday. School administrators decided to keep students inside for lunch a at all three south side schools. The coyote was alone and didn't appear to be doing anything threatening to people.
