The Illinois Valley Symphony Orchestra holds their fourth concert of their season this afternoon, featuring selected ballet pieces from composers, Aaron Copland and Charles Gounod. The concert will also include solo performances by the winners of the IVSO’s Young Performers Competition. The concert gets underway at 4 this afternoon at the LaSalle- Peru High School Auditorium. The Concert is sponsored in part by season sponsor Central Radio Group. Born in 1900, Aaron Copland, was one of the most important figures in American music during the second quarter of the twentieth century. Charles Gounod’s opera Faust, first staged in 1859, was performed over two thousand times by the Paris Théatre-Lyrique alone within a 50-year time span. Faust was the opera chosen to open the New York Metropolitan Opera House in 1883. The IVSO performs five short ballet pieces from Gounod’s Faust. Winners of the Young Performers Competition, held annually by the Illinois Valley Symphony, are Senior Division Winner Lydia Johnson, a 12th grade flutist from Ottawa and Junior Division Winner Faith Sommer, a 7th grade violinist of Spring Valley. Tickets are available online at ivso.org and at the door. Admission is $12 for adults, $5 for students K through College with ID and season subscribers.
