U.S. Diplomat Killed In Afghanistan
(Chicago, IL) -- The American diplomat who died yesterday in Afghanistan is apparently the first ever to perish in the war-torn country. Anne Smedinghoff of River Forest, Illinois was part of a convoy travelling in Afghanistan yesterday when a car bomb killed the 25-year-old, along with three U.S. soldiers and a Defense Department employee. The "Washington Post" says Smedinghoff was the first U.S. diplomat to be killed in Afghanistan.
Search Suspended After Mississippi River Boat Incident
(Hartford, IL) -- A search for any adult survivors of a boat accident on the Mississippi River is expected to begin again this morning. Police say the boat carrying a ten-year-old boy and two adults capsized on the Illinois side of the Mississippi at around 1:45 p.m. yesterday near Hartford. The boat was in rough water and the two adults were allegedly not wearing life jackets. The ten-year-old was pulled from the river by a tugboat and was taken to a hospital for treatment.
Illinois State Police Increase Construction Zone Patrols
(Rockford, IL) -- Illinois State Police cruisers will be very visible in highway construction zones from Rockton to the Wisconsin state line tomorrow. The Illinois Department of Transportation is funding the
initiative, with the aim of slowing down drivers who exceed posted construction zone speed limits. The minimum fine for speeding in a construction zone is 375 dollars.
Trout Fishing Season Begins In Illinois
(Springfield, IL) -- Pack up the poles and get ready to hit the local lakes and streams -- it's trout fishing season in Illinois. The Illinois Department of Natural Resources says they have stocked more than 60-thousand rainbow trout this year at 42 locations throughout the state. Fishing licenses are required, and are available at many bait shops and sporting goods stores across Illinois.
