Memorial Day services around the area(note: many events are “weather-permitting”)
The Harold E. Russell Post 938 American Legion of Ladd hosts several Memorial Day services through the day. At 8 am at Seatonville’s Ray Barto Memorial Park, 8:30 at Berean Cemetery in Ladd, 9 am at the Cherry Miner’s Cemetery, 9:45 at Calvary Cemetery in Arlington, 10:15 am at LaMoille’s Greenfield Cemetery, 11:15 at the Dalzell Memorial Park, 11:45 at Ladd Cemetery and 12:15 at War Memorial Park in Ladd.
8 am in Princeton – American Legion Post 125 of Princeton, along with VFW Post 4323 and AMVETS Post 180, performs Memorial Day honors beginning at Oakland Cemetery. The group then goes to Elm Lawn
Memorial Park for services.
10 am - Parade steps off by the former Nelson’s Drug Store on North Main Street.
10:30 - Memorial Day ceremonies begin at Soldiers and Sailors Park with Princeton Police Chief and retired Command Sgt. Major Tom Root as guest speaker. American Legion Post 125 Commander David Ohlson will be master of ceremonies. The service will also feature American Legion Woman’s Auxiliary Unit 125 and Princeton DAR members. Afterwards, the public is invited to the Legion Hall on Peru St. for light refreshments.
8 am in Ohio – Memorial Day Mass at Immaculate Conception Church. A rosary is recited after the Mass at St. Mary’s Cemetery.
8:45 am in Dover – American Legion Post 125 of Princeton, with VFW Post 4323 and AMVETS Post 180, performs Memorial Day honors at the Dover Prairie Repose on Route 34. 9 am in DePue – Memorial Day Mass takes place at St. Mary’s Cemetery in DePue. Those attending the event should bring lawn chairs. In case of rain, Mass will be in the church. Everyone is invited for refreshments after Mass in the church hall.
9 am in Utica - American Legion Post 731 leads a procession from Utica Community Hall to Danny Carey Memorial Park for services at 9:15. The procession then proceeds to Oak Hill and St. Mary’s cemeteries for services at 10, and then to Waltham Cemetery for services at 11 a.m.
9:15 am in Malden – American Legion Post 125 of Princeton, with VFW Post 4323 and AMVETS Post 180, performs Memorial Day honors at the Malden City Cemetery.
9:30 am in Hennepin - American Legion Post 1044 conducts services at Florid Cemetery followed by services at 11:30 at Riverside Cemetery, Hennepin. Granville American Legion Post 187 and Putnam County VFW will assist at the Hennepin services. The event is rain or shine.
9:30 in Ottawa - Ottawa Memorial Association holds the Memorial Day parade and ceremony to honor U.S. veterans, living and deceased. The parade starts at the Fox River Bridge and travels up Columbus Street to Washington Park where the ceremony starts at 10. After the ceremony, lunch is served at American Legion Post 33. 10 am in Henry - Henry American Legion Post 323 conducts services at the Henry Riverfront, followed by 11 a.m. services at Henry City Cemetery. Flag dedication services will be at noon at Stoner Park. The event is rain or shine.
10 am in Sheffield – Memorial Day services at the Veteran’s School Park. Sgt. James Constantine, returning from Afghanistan, will speak. There will be a military salute and the American Legion Auxiliary serves cookies and lemonade after the service.
10 am in Tampico – Tampico American Legion Post 574 conducts services at St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery. A salute and TAPS will be performed. Then they will proceed to the Tampico Memorial Cemetery.
10 am in Tiskilwa – Services services at East Park. All veterans are invited to join in the honor guard.
10 am in Van Orin — Services at the Bache Chapel. The Civil Air Patrol will post colors. There will be music and a speaker. Refreshments will be served in the fellowship hall after the service.
10 am in Wyanet — The Wyanet Memorial Day parade starts at the United Methodist Church. Services held in Forest Hill Cemetery and conducted by VFW Post 6634 and Auxiliary. The Wyanet Historical Society will sponsor an ice cream and sandwich social after the services at the Wyanet Memorial Park.
10 am in Manlius — Services at Mullin Memorial Park. Visitors should bring lawn chairs.
10 am in Oglesby - American Legion Post 237 and the Legion Auxiliary conducts services at Oglesby Memorial Park. The Oglesby Washington School Concert Band willperform. A balloon release and bell ringing will be performed in honor of all killed in combat since World War I.
10 am in Buda — Buda American Legion Post 261 conducts services at Hopeland Cemetery, west of Buda. Traditional military services will be provided by the Buda American Legion and Auxiliary. In the case of inclement weather, the service will be moved to Bureau Valley South Junior High School in Buda.
10:30 am in Mendota - Memorial Day program is in Restland Memorial Gardens, with the Veterans Memorial Council, VFW Post 4079, Ladies Auxiliary and the American Legion Post 540 participating. 11 am in Peru - American Legion Post 375, VFW and Peru Veterans Memorial Group conducts services, rain or shine, Monday at the baseball diamond in Washington Park.
11 am in Neponset — Neponset American Legion Post 875 holds its annual Memorial Day program in the Neponset Community Building.
11 am in Walnut — Services at the Walnut Cemetery. Walnut American Legion Past 179 is in charge of the program. The ceremony will be at the cemetery, rain or shine. The Legion Color Guard and the Walnut Boy Scouts and Cub Scouts will be marching from downtown, through the Avenue of Flags, beginning at 10:30 a.m.
11:30 am in LaSalle: The La Salle-Oglesby Veterans Memorial Group conducts services at Fifth Street Park. The event is rain or shine.Following services, participants will assist Oglesby American Legion with the conclusion of its program. 2 pm in Spring Valley – American Legion services at Valley Memorial Park on Route 89.
