Do you have any potentially hazardous waste that you've been waiting to get rid of? The Illinois Environmental Protection Agency is holding a Household Hazardous Waste Collection next Saturday, September 21st. The event is sponsored by Carus Corporation and will be held at their Peru headquarters off 5th Street in Peru. Some of the acceptable items are fluorescent bulbs, medicine, batteries, lawn chemicals and cell phones. According to the IEPA, it's been nine years since a household hazardous waste collection happened in Peru and the last event received waste from 452 households.

Accepted items: flourescent bulbs, medicine (Liquid/Pill), household batteries, lead acid batteries, aerosol pesticides, cleaning products, hobby chemicals, oil-based paints, lawn chemicals, used motor oil, pool chemicals, aerosol paints, drain cleaners, paint thinners, insecticides, cell phones, herbicides, antifreeze, pesticides, gasoline, mercury, solvents.
Unaccepted items: sharps, hypodermic needles, commercial waste, business sector waste, controlled substances, fire extinguishers, smoke detectors, institutional waste, agricultural waste, biological waste, propane tanks, ammunition, explosives, electronics, fireworks, farm oil, tires.
